I was on the imdb ES board, and i found a topic asking if Edward was a robot. It made me think..... I had always thought of him as human (apart from the scissors, of course) I mean, his eyes express such genuine emotion, and he feels as much as others, perhaps even more. He knows what it is to love, to be hurt (both emotionally and physically), to feel scared, to be alone... And yet, he appears to have been created from a machine. we never see his skin.. so under that leather suit.. is he robotic? Surely if he's robotic, that means he can't feel or be human... and yet he is. His eyes express so much... they tell his story. he is innocent, like a child, yet his eyes tell us a different story... that he is wise and knows what it is to be different, a recluse. Can a robot be all these things? Or is edward something more?

Well, in the beginning, the grandmother tells the little girl that the Inventor gave him insides - a heart, a brain, glands... everything except normal hands.
I think Edward was part machine (body wise) but mentally, he was human, because he knows pain, love, etc.
That's all I got for now.

Yeah, I was pondering what Kim tells her grandaughter at the start... but I still find it all quite mysterious. The concept is just so beautiful though.

It is a mystery... but I think that's what adds to the greatness of the story overall. We never know exactly what he is... it's like in The Birds, we never know what causes them to go bizerk.

Okay...I'm gonna' quote Johnny on this one.."He's not human..he's not a robot..he's a creation." (<-- direct quote) I mean..they don't say much about it in the movie. I think that, yeah, he's got mechanic parts to him mixed in with real ones but the mechanic parts aren't robotic...I think, I know, but I can't explain it!!! >___< He's got skin, he bleeds and scars..and his hair grows..he feels..he's..hmmm..I can't explain it, this is so frustrating!! But yeah, I think I'm gonna' go with JD on this one, lol, and just say that he's not a robot, not human, just a creation. You can decide on how he "works" or "lives" from there, lol. Gah..I can't explain it, so I'll think on it, lol, and reply with more later. ^ ^;;;;

That's a good question, but I gave up on thinking about it. I'll say what I think.
I think all you guys are right in a way. He's like Frankenstein sort of. Frankenstein was a bunch of dead people's body parts all sewn together and brought to life by electricity, and even though Edward wasn't made in the same fashion, it's along the same lines. Not entirely human, but not entirely a robot.
If you look in the the second flashback that Edward has, of the Inventor giving him etiquette lessons, the pages that flip at the beginning with the wind have sketches of how Edward was made. That might explain a little. =D

Lol yeah, I saw those pages. It's just... how can something that's "robotic" be so humanly? I like that quote btw Cait... he's a creation. I mean... he doesn't even age. The thought of him as a robot is quite depressing..... Edward will always be human to me.

Edward will always be human to me. Same here. When I watch that movie I never once think he's not human, to me he's more human than he is anything else. So, yeah, when I look at him, I see a human that was created, lol, not born like we are, he may not age, but he's not a robot, oops, in my other post I meant to say the other parts AREN'T robotic, not are ^__^;;;;; *Goes and fixes that* So, yeah, um, it's a bit confuzzling, inn't it? But yeah, to me he can't possibly be anything other than an almost human creation, so I'll always think of him as being human too. (Good topic Claire!!!)

The thought had never really fully crossed my mind until the other day.... I suppose Tim left it open for our own interpratation, didn't he? That man is a genius. (And thank you Cait!)

Yeah, I was thinking that too ^__^ We can all just form our own opinions of him..Yeah, he is, isn't he? (^__^ You're welcome!!) Okay, lol, I'll stop posting in this thread now, I'm going a little crazy with replying, aren't I? XD

No! Replying is good!! XD So... we have come to the conclusion that Edward is a creation and for now, that is the only definition we have. However, he is the most beautiful creation ever and is a HUMAN. No matter WHAT anyone says (even Mr Burton himself XD) Oh Kim, don't leave him in the castle alone!!!! *Runs up to castle to go see Edward*

I think that it proves how ingenius Tim is. It keeps us all asking questions and the movie is like 15 years old! I like how Johnny put it..
